THE Labasa sugar mill is crushing between 4000 and 5000 tonnes of cane per day.

In its response to questions from this newspaper, the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) said it was satisfied with the mill’s performance, which had crushed more than 72,500 tonnes of cane over the past four weeks.

“The mill has operated well, but stopped on Sunday due to cane supply issues and resumed on Sunday afternoon,” FSC stated.

“The mill has steadily improved performance and is crushing between 4000 and 5000 tonnes of cane per day. “The Labasa field team is pushing for continuity in the supply of cane. “Labasa mill has now crushed in excess of 72,500 tonnes of cane and has to date steadily improved its throughput and sugar recoveries above comparatives for the same period last year.”

The Labasa mill commenced crushing on June 19 and is now into its fourth week of crushing. On Wednesday this week, the mill stopped crushing for about two hours because of cane supply issues.
