SCHOOLS holding sporting events at Churchill Park in Lautoka will no longer pay for the usage the facility, says Local Government Minister Parveen Kumar.
He made the comment while officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony for a $90,000 multi-purpose court at Natokowaqa on Wednesday.
“Students and members of the public are now enjoying the new tracks at Churchill Park and just last week I have asked the Lautoka City Council that for Western Division schools meets, the council will only ask for a deposit of $500,” he said.
“And this will be refunded after the park is cleaned after any sports event.
“We are not going to charge fees anymore to schools.
“Because Government on one hand is giving free education for our children and bus fare, on the other hand councils cannot be charging for facilities like this — it is free now.”
Kumar added schoolchildren and the general public would soon be able to enjoy world-class aqua activities at the botanical gardens.
“Work on the new swimming school has already started and soon Lautoka will have a modern Olympic-sized pool which will consist of a 10 lane by 50m competition pool and an eight lane by 25m warm-up pool and a children’s pool.
“With this we will have the required change rooms and other facilities.”
