Former PWD employees jailed for abuse of office

TWO former employees of the former Public Works Department have been sentenced to six years imprisonment by Suva High Court judge Justice Salesi Temo.

Serving prisoner Amelia Vunisea who was the acting accounts officer for PWD pleaded guilty to one count of abuse of office and 12 counts of causing a loss, while serving prisoner Laisa Halafi who was the clerical clerk for PWD pleaded guilty to one count of abuse of office and 13 counts of causing a loss.

The court heard the total amount that was involved was $34,236.77.

Justice Temo said their acts were a serious breach of employer’s trust and that it was a well-planned offending.

He said that due to Vunisea and Halafi’s offending, there was monetary loss to the taxpayers of Fiji.

This sentence has been made concurrent to their current prison sentence.
