Former judicial officers on corruption charges

Update: 5:17PM TWO former judiciary officers who were separately charged with corruption related offences were released on bail today by the Ba Magistrates Court.

Saleshni Lata and Yogendran who were charged by the Fiji
Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) appeared before Magistrate Samuela
Qica.

Ms Lata was charged with one count of obtaining a gain and
one count of falsification of documents while Mr Yogendran was charged with one
count of general dishonesty – obtaining a gain and one count of falsification
of documents.

They were both represented by Semi Jitoko while Adrian
Sharma and Sam Savumiramira appeared for FICAC.

Mr Sharma informed the court that first phase disclosures
have been served to the accused persons.

It is alleged that in April 2017, Lata, while being employed
as an assistant court officer/revenue collector at the Rakiraki Magistrates
Court falsified receipts of the Judicial Trust Fund and the Maintenance Payment
Card, and as a result obtained a gain of $100 from the Judicial Department.

It is also alleged that in February 2017, Yogendran while
being employed as the assistant court officer at the Rakiraki Magistrates Court
falsified documents with the intention of dishonestly obtaining a gain in the sum
$50.

The matter has been adjourned February 20, 2018 for mention.
