CHANDRA Kali, 73, sat helplessly in her corrugated iron house at Wailea settlement in Vatuwaqa, Suva as floodwaters entered her home yesterday morning. Ms Kali’s home was among at least 10 houses that were inundated with floodwaters at Wailea during the heavy rain yesterday.

She said she was grateful for the help of her two sons, Suresh Kumar and Satish Kumar, who came to her rescue around 6am.

“I am too sick and I want people to come and help build my house higher so when the next flood occurs, I do not need to worry,” she said.

Her son, Suresh, said he could only think of his mother when the water level from a nearby river rose.

“We were all sleeping at that time and we had woken up to water surrounding our bed,” he said. “Today (yesterday) everything is wet, our fridge, mattress, rug and foodstuff are all damaged now.”

Mr Kumar said he did not wish to move to higher grounds because he was concerned about his house and his mother. He however pleaded with the relevant authorities for assistance to help his family.
