Fijians cycling to work ‘a great idea’

HAVING workers travel on bicycles to work is a great idea, but there is a need to construct a separate road for them in Fiji, says Fiji’s climate champion Inia Seruiratu.

Mr Seruiratu said this could be a way workers could avoid being caught in traffic congestions.

The Minister for Agriculture said although this was a good option, the safety of the people was also a concern.

“In overseas countries, you have special lanes for bicycles, but you do not have that in Fiji. It’s easy to introduce new ideas, but it’s another issue to provide the proper infrastructure because it’s a matter of safety,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“It is a good idea but it has to go with necessary infrastructure.

“There are ways in which we can go about in doing it, but safety perhaps, is the biggest concern.

“Perhaps you can avoid the congestion hours.

“These are some of the things you can do or otherwise, you can ask police for assistance for some form of escorts, like they do when they have other activities on the road.”

Meanwhile, the Fiji Roads Authority is expected to complete roadworks for the remaining sections of the Nabua roundabout in Suva by March 9, depending on the weather.

Motorists have been advised to take alternate and detour routes.
