A FIJIAN man has been charged with importing commercial quantities of border-controlled drugs by the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

John Kaurasi, 29, allegedly tried to smuggle 50 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a shipment of bottled water to Australia.

According to the Daily Mail Online, Mr Kaurasi allegedly prepared the $17.5 million shipment for export from Fiji before travelling to Australia to collect it.

The package arrived on August 10 and was referred to the AFP and officers from the Australian Border Force allegedly discovered the cocaine at an inspection facility in Sydney.

The Fijian man was arrested last week on Friday, following a search on a Hurstville property in Sydney, Australia.

According to the Daily Mail Online, the shipment was discovered by X-rays used by the Australian Border Force.

Mr Kaurasi did not apply for bail at Parramatta Court, meaning he will stay behind bars until he faces court again tomorrow.

According to the news report, AFP investigators were still working to identify the drug’s intended recipients.
