Update: 2:59PM FIJIANS are at the forefront of disaster response having lived through a category five cyclone, the global leader of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said.

Speaking in Suva this morning Elhadi As Sy who is visiting from Switzerland told the Fiji Red Cross he was eager to learn from them.

At the completion of traditional welcome rituals fir for a chief, Mr Sy said the International organisation was able to do its global work because of the example set by its local members.

Mr Sy is on a global visit and was just in the Marshall Islands where the country’s  national society has just been formed.

He will be in a live public discussion tonight at the USP where he will take questions from the public on youth, climate change and disaster response.
