SENIOR officials of all political parties, except the Freedom Alliance, were updated by Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem on the preparations towards the 2018 General Elections.

In a statement, the Fijian Elections Office stated that the political parties were informed that the Electoral Commission would not be seeking further changes to the Electoral system and it would be taking the country to elections based on the current legal framework.

Electoral Commission chairperson Suresh Chandra said this would ensure all preparations put into the electoral process were useful in the conduct of the general elections.

“It is important to ensure that there is certainty and that all parties know the rules and procedures of the elections in order to ensure that we have a free and fair election,” Mr Chandra said.

“As such, the Electoral Commission has taken this opportunity to talk to senior officials of the parties to iron out any teething issues that may be facing in relation to the elections.”

During the discussions, party officials were also briefed on the ongoing activities of the FEO, as well as legal requirements they may have to look for closer to elections.
