FCS boosts inmate service

THE Fiji Corrections Service has converted a dormitory at its Natabua facility in Lautoka to hold inmates travelling from outside of the Western Division.

FCS Commissioner Francis Kean said the refurbishment cost about $150,000.

He said it was a major project.

“This is for the transition of prisoners,” Mr Kean said.

“Basically, it’s for inmates that come outside of the Western Division or even from Ba, Rakiraki or Sigatoka.”

He said when they come to the High Court in Lautoka or Nadi Magistrates Court, they would be housed at the transition cell in Lautoka.

“We also have the segregation blocks.

“Sometimes we have disciplinary issues at the corrections centre so we segregate some of these prisoners in this cell.

“We have a few inmates who also need psychiatric care and now we have a psychiatric block for those inmates.”

He said a new logistics office had also been commissioned at the Lautoka-based facility.

“Our new logistics office was constructed at a cost of $120,000.”

He said the projects were part of the refurbishment and rehabilitation works carried out by FCS for its facilities across the country.
