Meningococcal vaccination should not only be targeted in the demographic age group of one to 19 years, but also in the areas at risk, says Fiji College of General Practitioners president Dr John Fatiaki. Dr Fatiaki made this comment in light of the death of a 21-year-old woman, Donisha Devnisha, who succumbed to meningococcal disease at the Labasa Hospital on May 30. He said the Ministry of Health should practise what other countries were doing when they had an outbreak. “They should do what people do in other places, you vaccinate the people around the area where an outbreak has occurred. He said the fact that the girl was 21 raised the issue of whether the vaccination should have been targeted in certain areas.
