Farmers mark World Day to Combat Desertification Day

FARMERS in the Qelewaqa area converged together this morning to celebrate World Day to Combat Desertification Day.

Farmers sang and danced as they celebrated the day with Assistant Minister for Agriculture Viam Pillay.

The day was marked with a march joined by farmers their families and members of the public

Officiating at the event Mr Pillay thanked farmers in the area for uniting together to make this morning’s celebrations a colorful one.

“In 1998 Fiji ratified the convention on addressing desertification and Fiji has been an active signatory to these commitments,” he said.

“Fiji through its line ministries is working towards reducing desertification through the use of sustainable agricultural practices. “
