A FAMILY in Vatukacevaceva Village, Rakiraki was forced to bring forward the funeral of a loved one because of the adverse weather experienced across the Western Division.

Pall bearers made haste across a damaged crossing, eager to conduct the final funeral rites before the onset of flooding from heavy downpours yesterday.

Lanieta Tokoni, a member of the funeral party, said the family could not wait another day as flooding had become a major issue for the village.

“Those who went to bring the body of the deceased went very early in the morning when the rain hadn’t started,” she said.

“They had to go early or else they would not have been able to bring the body across because of the rising water levels.”

Vatukacevaceva has been the focal point of warnings issued by the Fiji Meteorological Service for flooding in Rakiraki.
