Evacuation centres to be monitored

GOVERNMENT will closely monitor and survey the construction of evacuation centres in villages to ensure that they are not misused.

Speaking in Kubulau on Monday evening, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said at times these halls were misused for village events and other religious events.

Speaking at Vuadomo Village yesterday, Mr Bainimarama stressed again to villagers that his Government would not assist projects for constructing churches.

He told villagers that if Government assisted a denomination with the construction of a church then they were duty-bound to assist other denominations.

If this persisted, Mr Bainimarama said a huge portion of Government funds would be used solely for the constriction of churches.

Meanwhile, Vatulele villager Lepani Saurara requested Mr Bainimarama for Government assistance for the construction of their cyclone evacuation centre.

Mr Saurara said their evacuation centre was damaged during Severe TC Winston.

“We have identified a new site and already begun foundation work for the proposed evacuation centre,” he said.

Mr Bainimarama had instructed personnel to look into the request after approving their request.

He had also instructed Water Authority of Fiji and Fiji Roads Authority personnel to look into Mr Saurara’s request for roading and a new water source in the village.
