Elder eyes team spot

THREE-TIME Olympian Robert Elder has to compete in the World Archery Fiji qualifiers for the 2018 Oceania Continental Championship.

The championship is set to be held in New Caledonia in July.

Fiji archers competed in their first qualifying event at the Saint Joseph’s Secondary School groud in Suva on Saturday.

“Robert is in Melbourne, Australia training for the competitions,” World Archery Fiji secretary Ajay Ballu said.

“He (Robert) has to attend two out of three qualifying events in order to make it to the final team.

“He has to make his way to the first and second competitions if he wants to qualify.”

Ballu said the archers were trying their best.

“We had the first qualifying round for the Oceania Continental Championship and we had a good turnout at the event. All the archers had done well,” he said.

“It is one of the biggest events and after which we will start preparation for the 2019 Pacific Games which will be held in Samoa.

“The archers might compete in a few competitions in Australia and New Zealand before going to the Pacific Games which would definitely boost their preparation.”
