THE Energy Fiji Ltd is expected to answer all queries posed by the Fiji Times with regards to the raising of the Wainisavulevu Weir which was commissioned by the Prime Minister in 2015.

In an email received from Rachel Autar the Executive Assistant to the CEO of EFL “the press conference at the EFL boardroom at 3.30pm today will discuss the latest article in the Fiji Times today and in the weekend.”

Satellite images and photos of the Wainisavulevu area show an area that looks barren and wasted, with allegations by conservationists and environmentalists that this is the result of the raising of the Weir, which did not undergo a proper consultation process.

At a cost of $43m the Weir was raised to act as a “diversion structure supplying water for hydro-electric generation initially through Wainikasou Power Station and then through Wailoa Power Station after impoundment behind Monasavu Dam.The Wainisavulevu Weir is a component of the overall Monasavu Hydro-Electric Scheme,” (according to the EFL)

More of the EFL press conference later this afternoon.
