ENERGY Fiji Ltd is looking at constructing more hydro dams to meet the growing demand for electricity among Fijians.

This was confirmed by EFL chairman Daksesh Patel who said that apart from a new 5 mega watt solar grid for the western side of main land Viti Levu, EFL was already in consultation to have another hydro dam.

This newspaper understands a new 30MW hydro-dam is expected to be established in Namosi, with consultation still underway.

Mr Patel says they will ensure that proper processes are followed before the dam is constructed.

He said they managed to connect 60,000 Fijians on to the grid in the past three years, reducing carbon emission by 200,000 tonnes.

He added that EFL was in line with Government’s vision of achieving up to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030.

The Monasavu Hydro Scheme was commissioned in 1983, while the Wainisavulevu weir was commissioned in 1984 and raised again in 2015.

The Nadarivatu Hydro Dam was commissioned in 2012.
