ENERGY Fiji Ltd reaffirms that it had followed due process as clearly stipulated in the Environment Impact Assessment report, before the raising of the Wainisavulevu weir in Naitasiri.

EFL chief executive officer Hasmukh Patel said proper consultation was done with the landowners and other stakeholders before the $43 million project began.

Satellite images and photos obtained by this newspaper of the Wainisavulevu area show an area of about 1.5 square kilometres that has been impacted.

In an area that is supposed to be lush green forest has now turned out to be like a barren waste land.

When questioned on what EFL would be doing in terms of protection of the biodiversity, restoration and rehabilitation of eco-system, Mr Patel said; “This is a technical matter which will need verification and confirmation. We maintain EFL did all within the approved guidelines.

“EFL thoroughly follows the environmental laws of the country and takes all necessary consultations”.
