Effects of violence against women

THE implications of violence against women have devastating effects on the lives of women, children and their families and often end in fatality.

In a press statement, the acting executive director for Media Watch Group, Laitia Tamata, highlighted this and stressed the need to protect our most vulnerable groups.

Mr Tamata said despite the efforts created through awareness programs, the issue continued to surface.

“Sexual and gender-based violence is the most extreme form of systemic inequality experienced by women and girls and despite awareness created on the issue across the country, it continued to be prevalent,” Mr Tamata said.

“It is a matter of shame and disgrace that Fiji had a high incidence of cases of violence against women.”

Mr Tamata ensured MWG’s commitment to advocating and educating citizens on this prevailing issue whenever they interacted with the public with regards to media literacy.
