THE Dreketi Central College Golden Anniversary Celebrations in Macuata ended on a high note on Saturday night after former students and villagers collected more than $10,000.

School principal Emosi Kuli said the support from former students and the villages in the Dreketi district was overwhelming during the three-day celebrations.

Mr Kuli said funds raised during the event would go towards refurbishment and upgrade of the school’s computer laboratory.

“The school began in the 1960’s and the celebration meant a lot for the people of Dreketi,” he said.

“We are told that the current school site used to be a horse racing track and the visions of a few European families headed by the Bull family of Dreketi changed it to accommodate the school as it is today.

“Dreketi has produced remarkable leaders who continue to stamp their mark in the country including Professor Biman Prasad, former ambassador Filimoni Kau, and Deputy Commissioner of Police Isikeli Ligairi to name a few.”

Former student Prof Prasad closed the celebrations on Saturday evening, contributing $1000 to the fundraising.

Prof Prasad said Fiji could learn from the community in Dreketi, adding that their strength lay in their multiracial backgrounds.

He called on current students that they were capable of making their mark in the country’s history if they put their heart, adding that nothing was impossible.

He added that the school’s 50th anniversary marked 50 years of unity for a common purpose, urging people to continue.
