OLYMPICS rugby 7s gold medal winner, Apisai Domolailai was in top form during the opening day of the 2018 Fiji Bitter Marist 7s at the ANZ Stadium yesterday.
Domolailai, who plays for Army Green, helped his side win its first two games against Mana Magicians 36-0 and St Gabriel Nakavika 28-7.
The Nasama, Nadroga, lad took time off from his national 7s duties after he was injured during the South Africa 7s last year. He is trying to make his way back with the help of former national 7s teammate Isake Katonibau and his Army Green side.
Army Green assistant manager Jonetani Gonekalaou says Domolailai’s performance is improving since he joined the team at the Nawaka 7s.
“We’re helping him and Katonibau get more game time and hopefully get back in to the national 7s squad,” he said.
“He’s not just here to play, but has shown interest in joining the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces.”
Gonekalaou said the pair were hard to contain and they combined well with other players in the team.
Domolailai said he was happy with the assistance he was getting on his effort to make a comeback.
He also dedicated his achievements to his grandparents who were the backbone of his success.
With the recent loss of his grandmother, it has motivated him to work hard.
“I am taking one step at a time and whatever God has in place for me, will guide me through,” Domolailai said.
The Nadroga strongman spoke of his recovery and how he was thankful to the people who helped him.
“I won’t give up easily,” the lanky ball hunter said.
