Diver dies in Doubtful Sound

Update: 12:41PM SOUTH Island: A MAN has died during a diving trip in waters near Bauza Island in Doubtful Sound.

Sergeant Tod Hollebon of New Zealand Police said at about 1:45pm yesterday, they received a report that a diver had been recovered unresponsive in Doubtful Sound.

He said the report came from a boat on the water in the same area.

“A distress call was sent out and a second nearby vessel responded as they had a doctor on board,” Sgt Hollebon said.

“The doctor performed CPR on the unresponsive diver but unfortunately he did not survive.”

He said there was a party of nine people on the boat, three of whom were diving, when the diver got into trouble.

“The two other divers who assisted in bringing the man to the surface were flown to Invercargill Hospital as a precaution.”

Police is providing support to the family of the man and the death will be referred to the Coroner.
