Update: 1:16PM THE definition of disaster can be expanded to include the high prevalence of diseased livestock in the country.
Fiji’s Agriculture Minister Inia Seruiratu said this in Parliament this morning in response to questions from Opposition MP Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.
Following ministerial explanations on government efforts to manage bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis infections, the Tui Cakau asked if disaster management, which is also Mr Seruiratu’s portfolio, could consider including cattle disease in its definition.
“Given that farmers don’t always take your advice, please explain why the definition of disasters can’t be expanded to take care of issues such as this,” Ratu Naiqama said.
“The control and enforcement in farming community, considering the dangers there.”
Mr Seruiratu clarified there were existing legislations, which allowed the ministry to quarantine animal movements from ‘red zones’.
