THE Fiji Roads Authority is planning to have a dedicated bus lane that will have park and ride access to support the growth of public transportation.
FRA chief executive officer Jonathan Moore told the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Forum that they were planning to provide more facilities for faster vehicles to pass slower vehicles in major highways.
He said they were carrying out durable and longer term renovations rather than the previous practice of short term temporary repairs, and they were also planning to bring the latest technology in construction.
Mr Moore said people could not rely only on Queens Road and Kings Road in Viti Levu and that was why they were planning to provide alternative routes throughout the country.
FRA is also trying to ensure that no more single lane bridges are constructed and that every river has an alternative crossing.
One of the issues highlighted by Mr Moore was vehicle overloading, which he stated posed a serious threat.
He said they were working with the Land Transport Authority to provide more weigh bridge facilities and they were also escalating the problem to the higher levels of government and demonstrating the true cost of overloading.
