SUGARCANE cooperative executives from Lautoka, Nadi and Sigatoka who received Government funds for the purchase of mechanical harvesters will undergo specialised training at the Sugar Cane Growers Council next Wednesday.
Council CEO Sundresh Chetty said the new training workshop was designed to ensure well-managed and sustainable equipment.
“We are very grateful to Government for providing the $2 million, which was given out to 21 cooperatives to assist in the purchase of mechanical harvesters,” he said.
“This training will assist these cooperatives make the best use of their harvesters by enhancing their business skills.”
Understanding the principles of a cooperative, understanding management and leadership in terms of the Cooperative Act, understanding their roles and responsibilities, report keeping, budget preparation and governance would be topics discussed during the training.
Mr Chetty also acknowledged the European Union and Pacific Community (SPC) for providing funding for the cooperative training.
Training programs would also be held for registered cooperatives in Ba, Labasa, Tavua and Rakiraki.
In May last year, Government gave the 21 cooperatives $90,000 each as deposit for the purchase of mechanical harvesters via loans obtained through the Fiji Development Bank.
