STUDENTS and members of the public from as far as Taveuni, Rabi and Kioa converged in numbers to join in the Constitution Day celebrations in Labasa Town today.

People braved the hot Babasiga sun this morning to be part of the march that began at the Y-Corner and proceeded through Labasa Town towards Subrail Park.

The march was greeted with a glaring reception from a sea of blue that had converged at the venue.

Officiating at the celebrations, Fijian President Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote thanked the northerners for gathering in numbers to recognise the binding document upon which Fiji’s democracy stood.

“As we gather in Labasa, it is the first time that the celebrations are being held in the North outside of Viti Levu, thank you for your support,” Mr Konrote said.

“Students that have travelled all the way from the outlying parts of Vanua Levu, this will be a memory that will stick in your minds for the rest of your lives.

“All around Fiji, our brothers and sisters are also commemorating this day.”
