SOME athletes running in today’s Coca Cola Games did not meet the official qualifying standards.

The Fiji Times understands that at least one athlete from a Tailevu school who qualified from his zone to compete at the Coca Cola Fiji Finals in the 100m and 200m is listed in the official programme as a 400m competitor.

The issue was brought up by teachers present at yesterday’s Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association Annual General Meeting.

FSSAA General Secretary Vuli Waqa confirmed the allegation last night but could not provide details as to how many more athletes were registered in events they had not qualified for.

“It was brought up in the AGM and so we reminded the delegates from the Zones that we could not remove the name now because we will have to analyse and change everything,” Waqa said.

Admitting it was an issue of contention, Waqa said the debate had to be brought to a vote.

“So we voted to just keep the programme the way it is and let the athlete run but this must never happen again.”

The FSSAA will investigate the issue at the completion of the Coca Cola Games to determine how many more athletes had been registered for events they had not qualified for.
