CHILDREN with Down syndrome need to be cared for, loved and supported just like any other child, says Nadi School for Special Education head teacher Praveen Reena Devi.
She made the comment as the school celebrated World Down Syndrome Day in Nadi yesterday.
“The theme for the event this year is ‘What I bring to my Community’ and it’s a major event on our school calendar,” she said.
“For us, it is a way to create awareness so people know what Down syndrome is and how they can look after children who have Down syndrome.”
Ms Devi said they had organised classroom-based activities to get students involved in the event.
“We invited parents to come and share their stories too and we wanted to spread more awareness about Down syndrome.
“We don’t want children with Down syndrome to be alienated or ignored. They need to be loved and cared for.”
The school has 168 students and 10 teachers.
