MERELITA Cawai of Wainimala Secondary School won the first gold for her school in 3000 metres girl open grade final at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.

The Korovou Wainimala lass said she had one thing on her mind and that was to win the event.

“I kept my pace and also looked out on my two opponents who were following me and I kept telling myself that I will finish the race,” she said.

“The sun was hot and I felt dizzy and thirsty wanting to give up but with the cheering from our supporters from the sideline kept me pushing along.”

The 17-year-old lass said she almost ran out of breath in last round she felt she was losing out.

“I had lost my sense and that was when the Rewa girl went past in the 200 meters turn but I just don’t know what happened and I pushed forward running past her and headed to the finish line.

“The tracks were hot and wearing socks I thought it was going to ease the pain but I am glad I finally made it through.”

Cawi will be looking to get her second gold in the 1500m today.
