THE cane price of $80 per tonne is reasonable and good, says Mohammed Rafique, the newly elected president of the Labasa Cane Producers Association. In an interview with this newspaper, Mr Rafique said the assistance by Government over the past years through subsidising costs have benefitted farmers.

“Government has also helped out with improving road conditions which cuts down repair cost of trucks that cart cane to the mill. So all these kinds of assistance help farmers and I feel the $80 per tonne is good.”

Farmers, on the other hand, he said should work hard.

“If Government is assisting them, then farmers should cultivate idle land and increase cane farming production.
