GOVERNMENT’S assistance to cane farmers around the country has certainly helped eased financial burdens, says Labasa Cane Producers Association president Mohammed Rafique.

In an interview, he said initiatives such as subsidising costs of fertiliser and improvement of road condition in cane belt areas have helped farmers.

“Having a bad road condition means extra costs for truck repairs but with the good road condition in cane farming areas, farmers can increase their trips to cart cane to the mill,” he said.

“So having $80 per tonne of cane is good for farmers.”
