Call to promote Fiji as a tourism destination

SEVERE Tropical Cyclone Winston generated a huge amount of damage in Fiji — as much as 28 per cent of the gross domestic product however the tourism sector has been able to bounce back from the damage.

Asian Development Bank’s chief economist Yasuyaki Sawada said it was very important for the tourism sector to bounce back because it was vital economic activity for the country.

Mr Sawada said more tourism markets were opening up for Fiji with Fiji Airways starting direct routes to destinations such as San Francisco, Singapore and now Japan.

With more and new routes being sourced as tourism markets, Mr Sawada said it was equally important for tourism stakeholders to promote destination Fiji to Asian countries.

He said tourism generated economic activity, created employment and foreign revenue for the country and it was also important for tourism industry stakeholders to invest in human capital.

According to Mr Sawada a skilled workforce is vital for the tourism industry — people who know how to speak the language, serve the hospitality industry well and know what guests want.
