THE owner of a bus which caught fire in Lautoka last week is calling on authorities to conduct tests on all buses being imported into the country to ascertain the flammability of interior materials.

Managing director of Fiji Transport Company Ltd Anil Singh said he was concerned about the bus fire event involving his vehicle.

“I am worried because according to the bus driver, the fire spread quite quickly through the bus and it was focused mainly on the upper part of the cabin and front of the bus,” he claimed.

“I am also concerned because the Chinese-made bus was bought in 2011, so it’s not that old.

“We need to know the materials used in the construction of the bus and especially what is used in the interior works because we do not want the lives of passengers and out staff to be put at risk.”

About 30 people travelling from Lautoka to Ba escaped relatively unscathed when the bus caught fire on the Kings Rd at Lovu in Lautoka, last week on Thursday about 2pm.

The National Fire Authority has confirmed that it was conducting investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire.
