Burglars hit church, shops in Labasa

Listen to this article:

THREE cases of burglary were reported at the Labasa Police Station over the weekend.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that two shops and a church within the town area were targeted by thieves.

She confirmed that police had information regarding the suspect believed to have been involved in burglaries of a church in Naodamu and two shops at Gurbachan Singh mall.

The Fiji Times team arrived at work yesterday morning and saw broken glasses shattered on the floor of the mall and alerted police.

The glass doors of the two shops — Compcity and Sky High Technologies — were broken.

Shanil Prasad, owner of Sky High Technologies said this was not the first time he had been robbed.

“Since 2016, I have had my shops broken into and it’s becoming a real nuisance for me and my businesses,” he said.

“I hope something is done about it because the business community needs to be protected.”

It is not clear at this stage whether thieves took off with items.

It is also understood that thieves gained access to the mall by climbing through the open space on the first floor of the mall that is currently under construction.

Footprints were seen on the dusty tarpaulin that covered the escalator from the ground floor.

Ms Naisoro said police were still investigating the matter.
