FIJI was among countries given special mention yesterday in Brisbane, Australia, in the lead-up to the start of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. Commonwealth Games ambassador and Australian gold medallist in cycling in the 2016 Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Anna Maree Devenish Meares said Fijian Elia Green of the Australia 7s women’s team and Fijian women athletes were among those promoting gender equality in sports.
Security is tight at the games in all venues and across Brisbane City. Australian Police said 10,000 police officers are working in the games.
Commonwealth Games Corporation chairman Peter Beattie said intermittent rain across Brisbane would not affect the games’ opening ceremony tomorrow. His statement follows reports of bad weather heading for Brisbane.
