The Hong Kong 7s is surely the best sevens tournament and this can be confirmed by the popularity of the event. The tournament slogan “Where the world comes to play” is truly experienced by the team from the different parts of the world in Hong Kong to take part in the three-day tournament. Sevens rugby fans from around the world make an effort to be there to witness the best teams in the world battle.
Fiji will have to learn a lot from the Hong Kong 7s if it wants to have a chance of hosting a tournament in the world sevens series. Everything from the running of the games, entertainment for fans, maintenance of the ground after every game, medical, security and the treatment of the media is on top of the list. No wonder Hong Kong 7s is described by top sevens journalists as the ‘Mecca of Sevens’.
Fiji was also represented among the officials of the 2018 HSBC Hong Kong 7s. Suva referee Tevita Rokovereni officiated in the Pool C match between South Africa and South Korea. Another Fijian referee to have officiated at Hong Kong Stadium was James Bolabiu.
By 12 midday, organisers of the Hong Kong 7s announced that the South Stand had been filled to capacity. The stand, famous for the beer lovers and their fancy costumes, also included some Fijian fans with their flags flying high.
Fiji media was not fully represented like it used to be at the Hong Kong 7s in past years. A delegation from two Hindi radio stations from New Zealand was also present at the Hong Kong Stadium to cover the performance of the Fiji 7s team. There was also a team from an online rugby website from the USA.
