Blue ribbon race

THE 2018 Coca-Cola Games blue ribbon event will once again become the highlight of next month’s Fiji Finals in Suva.

The race to crown the Fiji secondary schools’ fastest pair of heels is building up interest as zones continue throughout the country.

In the Suva Zone Two competition yesterday, star athletes Tony Lemeki of Marist Brothers High School and Matabese Tuvusa of Suva Grammar School stole the show.

Lemeki won the 100m with a time of 10.86 seconds leaving Tuvusa to second place with 10.89s while the later reversed the placing in the 200m final. He came first with a time of 22.11s pushing Lemeki to second place with 22.20s.

The difference between the two was how they started off the block. Lemeki had a bullet start.

“I was confident to win the race as last year I won the same race in the Coca-Cola Games,” he said.

“I have to improve on my starting in the 100m in the Coca-Cola Games. I was too slow in the start and when I wanted to catch up in the last 50 metres, I could not.

“Hopefully, I we will meet again in the main competition next month.”

Lemeki, who also represented Fiji in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games, competed yesterday despite carrying an injury.

“I ran with a torn ligament in the race. Normally it takes 10 days for an injury such as this to heal, but I ran after three days after sustaining the injury,” he said.

“I started off the block well and that made the difference. All the hard training had paid for me.”
