BA Veterans have become the new champion of the 2014 RC Manubhai/APCO Coatings Fiji International Veterans tournament.
The side survived a tough test against New Zealand Lautoka Masters 4-3 in the final to win the game on penalty kicks at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park yesterday.
Former Tavua rep and evergreen goalkeeper Filipe Bodi was the toast for the Ba side in the final.
Bodi was rock solid on defence during the game and passed the test with flying colours during the penalty shoot-out.
He saved his team from the jaws of defeat when he stopped a penalty kick to give his side the much needed victory.
Lautoka on the hand had themselves to be blamed for the loss.
The Blues missed a penalty kick in the dying seconds of the game after a Ba player was penalised for handling the ball inside their penalty box.
Former Lautoka and Rewa rep Joji Rasiga’s penalty kick hit the cross bar and the ball fell into the safe hands of Bodi leaving the scores nill-all at fulltime.
Rasiga, however managed to make amends and scored a goal during the penalty shoot-out but was not enough to save his team.
Ba coach Apimeleki Vunisa dedicated the win to the team manager Roshi Gir who also celebrated her birthday yesterday.
He said the side was given a tough challenge by Lautoka and commended his teammates for their effort.
“This win is special because we are also celebrating our manager’s birthday,” said Vunisa.
“I thanked the players for the teamwork and perseverance after two days of tough competitions.
“Lautoka gave us a good game that made our players to rise to the occasion and deliver the goods.”
Laced with former national reps such as Jope Lomu and Viliame Batidegei, Ba defeated Suva Masters 2-0 in the semi-final while Lautoka outclassed Nadroga 4-1 in the other semi-finals.
Lautoka’s Waisale Rasoki won the golden boot award while Ba goalkeeper Bodi won the golden gloves award.
Goal scores for Lautoka in the final are Joji Rasila, Waisale Rasoki and Devend Krishna while Dhirend Chandra, Jope Lomu,Chandra Segran Naidu, and Mosese Valewalu scored for Ba veterans.
