Ba unleashes athletics stars

NEW secondary schools athletics stars were discovered during the Ba Zone athletics competition last week.

During the two-day competition, 10 athletes set records at Lautoka’s Churchill Park.

Some of the standout athletes included Lisa Lockington, the younger sister of national rep and Coca-Cola Games high jump champion Shawntell Lockington, Nukuloa College track queen Naomi Navuga, record-breaking middle distance runner Salote Naiula of DAV College, Kamil College sprinters Zuber Ali and Evnish Prasad, and javelin thrower Bernadette Penueli. Naiula set two records in the junior girls 800m and 400m with a time of two minutes 31.70s and 1m 03.72s respectively, while Navuga set a new time in the junior girls 100m of 12.65sec.

Ali stamped his name in his first year of participation by breaking the sub junior boys 100m record with a time of 12.19s.

Also reaffirming his status as Ba’s fastest schoolboy is Khalsa College track king Jona Nabaro who won three gold medals. He won the 100m, 200m, and anchored his 4x100m relay team to a fairytale finish. Zone president Hussain Shah said having the competition on synthetic tracks for the first time contributed to the success of the event.
