ANZ Stadium to host major local football tourney

Listen to this article:

SUVA’S ANZ Stadium will host its first major local football tournament next month after a lapse of four years.

The last time a football tournament was held in the capital was in 2014 (IDC).

Eight Premier and eight Senior district teams will take part at next month’s Courts Inter District Championship.

In 2014, Suva played Nadi in the final and Napolioni Qasevakatini scored the winner in extra time for the whites in the 1-nil win.

Present coach Gurjit Singh was the coach of the whites back then as well.

Interestingly, Singh has returned to coach Suva this year and Qasevakatini has also applied for a transfer from Suva to Nadi in the current transfer window.

Suva is pooled with Nadi, Tavua and Rewa at the tournament.

The other pool consists of Ba, Lautoka, Labasa and Nasinu.

The tournament will be held from October 5-6, 2018.
