FIJI’S Minister of Defence and National Security Ratu Inoke Kubuabola arrived in Georgia yesterday along with his delegation for a ministerial bilateral visit.
According to a Government statement, the visit culminates the signing of a security memorandum of understanding between Fiji and Georgia.
The Minister for Internal Affairs Georgia Giorgi Gakharia is hosting the Fijian delegation from September 23 to 28 September.
“Fiji has long standing relations with Georgia in the area of medical cooperation. Currently, there are nine (9) Fijian medical students studying in Georgia,” the statement read.
Ratu Inoke had earlier met with the Foreign Minister of Georgia, Dr Maia Panjikidze in 2013 to discuss ways and means of intensifying relations between the two countries, given the growing developments in their relations in recent past.
Fiji and Georgia formally established diplomatic relations on 29 March, 2010. Since then, Fiji has continued to receive delegations from Georgia. In November 2011, Georgia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Grigol Vashadze arrived with his delegation.
The official program starts on today where Ratu Inoke and the Fijian delegation will meet with Georgia’s Minister for Defence, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Speaker of Parliament and Head of Security Services apart from visits to other significant places around Georgia including the State Military Scientific technical centre.
Ratu Inoke is accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Fiji Police Force.
The delegation returns on September 29, 2018.
