ISLANDS in the Lomaiviti Group affected by the prolonged dry season have been carted water by the government vessel, MV Sigavou.

A statement from the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development through the National Disaster Management Office said they continued to work with the Water Authority of Fiji in the water carting exercise around rural and maritime areas.

“After the first two weeks of operation, the water carting exercise for the Lomaiviti Group has been completed,” the statement said.

“The team onboard the Sigavou has delivered 39,000 litres of water in Makogai, 28,166 litres in Batiki and 6795 litres for Moturiki in this initial phase of the Eastern Division immediate response plan.

“The carting of water for northern Lau commenced last Thursday with the focus on Avea, Cikobia and Adi Maopa Secondary School.

“This schedule will also cover Lovu Village and Gau Secondary School upon their return while the team is expected to supply and meet the capacity target of the affected communities for the duration of two weeks pending further assessment of prevailing weather conditions affecting the group.”

The statement said the NDMO also received requests from southern Lau including Kabara, Oneata, Ogea and Totoya for water carting where the delivery would be scheduled once verification had been completed by the relevant agencies on the ground.

A total of 1,267,000 litres of water has been delivered to the Yasawa Group, which includes Malolo Island, Waya Lailai Island, Wayalevu, Yasawa, Vatulele, Viwa and Nacula Island, the statement says.
