5.3 magnitude quake recorded in Lau group

ANOTHER earthquake was recorded within the Fiji region this morning.

This time around, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Oneata in the Lau group.

The Seismology Unit of the Mineral Resources department in Suva confirmed this seismic activity occurred at 3:28am at a depth of 561km.

The earthquake was located 55km Northwest from Waiqori Village in Lau, 742km Southeast from Vancouver, Canada, and 878km Northwest from San Jose, California.

The department said the seismic activity did not pose any immediate threat to the Fiji region.

Meanwhile a 3.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded near Wakaya region on this week Tuesday while a 7.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Lau group on Sunday.
