2FRESH and Raiwaqa Flyers pocketed $500 each and took home a trophy each after winning the Suva Touch Association season one men’s and mix grade competition at Sacred Heart College ground in Nasese, Suva on Saturday. In the men’s grade, 2Fresh defeated upcoming Baby Bombers 7-5 while in the mix grade, Flyers proved too strong for Browning Bombers winning 7-4 in the respective grades.

STA games co-ordinator Maraia Uluimoala said it was a heart-stopping final for both the teams.

“We are extremely pleased with the performance of both the teams as they displayed good games of touch rugby in the final. It was a hard fought battle for 2Fresh and Flyers,” she said.

“It was the experience of 2Fresh which proved the difference in the match as they played brilliant in the first half, but the second half belonged to Baby Bombers. It was experience that counted for them.

“In the mix grade, Flyers showed the glimpse of players of past years’ players who came back to play and help Flyers win. The side last won in the mix category in 2015.”

Uluimoala said STA was in the right path to develop players.

“It was a brilliant performance from Baby Bombers as it was their first year in the competition and they proved a lot of potential as they made it to the final. This shows that development is taking place,” she said.

“There are also a lot of young players who played in this season from the 12 men’s and 11 mixed teams.”

Semi-finals: Men’s: 2Fresh 9-8 Raiwaqa Flyers, Browning Bombers 4-5 Baby Bombers. Mixed: 2Fresh 7-8 Raiwaqa Flyers, Browning Bombers 8-7 City Roosters
