NADI or Lautoka could be the site of a new museum dedicated to the history, legacy and contribution of Girmityas and their descendants to Fiji, says Attorney General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

He made the announcement while delivering the 2018-2019 National Budget in Parliament this evening.

“We are very proud to announce that we have set aside a very special allocation of $500,000 for commemoration next year of the 140th anniversary of the first ship carrying indentured labourers and Girmityas from India to Fiji,” he said.

“That will also include nationwide ceremonies of remembrance and cover the first round of funding of $300,000 towards the construction of a museum either in Lautoka or Nadi.”
