NUKU’ALOFA, 26 SEPTEMBER 2018 (TONGA WIRTES)—Twelve Tongan athletes will be competing in athletics, futsal (a variant of association football played on a hard court), and swimming, at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 6 – 18 October 2018.
The Tonga Sports Association and National Olympic Committee (TASANOC) has confirmed the names of the team.
Sione Tu’ihalamaka will compete in athletics.
Finau ‘Ohuafi will compete in swimming, and in women’s futsal (Under 18) in which 10 athletes will take part. Finau is currently swim training in Japan at the ONOC-Fukuoka Training Camp for the month of September in preparation for the Games.
Team Tonga will be led by Chef de Mission, ‘Inoke Afeaki and assisted by officials from the three sports.
TASANOC said that although Tonga was given universality places in Archery and Taekwondo, the athletes did not meet the minimum qualification standards that would have allowed them to take part in the games.
Officials and athletes are expected to start departing from Saturday 29 September onwards.
